Most specifically I found a book on Heretics (see “Heretics” by G. K. Chesterton – 1905). Now, by colorful I mean it was actually, REALLY interesting. Yet when compared to the life of the author himself, the content of the book pales.

The writer, one Gilbert Keith Chesterton, was a most gifted and prolific writer. In addition to 69 published books before his death G.K. left another 10 or so books unfinished. Chesterton defended Faith, Christianity, and the importance of Orthodoxy (the authorized, accepted christian doctrines) with fire and inspiration. G.K. vigorously rejected ideas like “eugenics” and ethnic cleansing. Gilbert even wrote about socialism and large impersonal government organizations. (see “Eugenics and Other Evils” by G.K. Chesterton – 1922).

Gilbert had friendships, with the likes of H.G. Wells, and George Bernard Shaw. Although his friends did not see the world through the same set of lenses, but they still enjoyed each others company. While they exchanged powerful discussions on politics, and social issues, they remained warm and friendly. Commentators noted that his warmth and passionate conversation, allowed him to match wits with many cultural figures of his day.

“Sure, this guy was interesting”, you might be saying. “Why should we care?”, you may ask.

But even if you didn’t think those things (you have now that I mentioned it though) I will tell you.

As accomplished as this man was… As connected and respected as he was, Gilbert Chesterson battled with his own darkness. G.K. fought depression, and suicidal thoughts as a teen and young adult. Yet over the span of his life, Gilbert found his strength, his resilience, in Christ.

In short, (I know, too late) the man was a brilliant philosopher, observer of people, and gifted writer.

All of his potential, could have been completely wasted.

He could have given in to his depression, and the internal struggle of hopelessness. He chose not to make darkness an option.

Chesterton chose a life fired and inspired by the Spirit and Words of God.

This example of the resilience of Christ in a man, is truly amazing. It is a wonderful model for all of us that struggle with depression, anxiety or other mental illnesses. In G.K.’s story I find hope.
